FAC COMMITTEE

  1. OLASUBOMI’S CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARDS THE WORK OF THE FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (FAC) OF THE UK PARLIAMENT

Olasubomi also served the Select Committee on Foreign Affairs of the UK Parliament (FAC) in 2021 by contributing a detailed research to its inquiry into Global Britain and the Nigeria-UK relationship thereby providing Evidence for Consideration in the Integrated Review of the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office priorities for Official Development Assistance for Nigeria. She spent her time, effort, expertise and resources to prepare a detailed and excellent research document with the support of another researcher.

As part of this work, Olasubomi advocated for the Foreign Affairs Select Committee to meet with UK-based Nigerians, giving a voice and platform to those who otherwise may have remained silent on matters that would be of grave importance to them. The meeting went ahead in September 2021, with MPs including Chris Bryant, MP; Alicia Kearns, MP; Claudia Webb, MP; and Neil Coyle, MP – all present and meeting with Nigerian stakeholders.

Jonathan Hingston, Senior Specialist at the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Select Committee Inquiry Manager, House of Commons – expressed his appreciation for Olasubomi’s support, stating that:

“Olasubomi’s support of the Foreign Affairs Committee’s Nigeria inquiry was invaluable. Throughout the inquiry, she was always on hand to support additional areas the Committee requested more information on.”

“She always responded in a positive and punctual way. I am also aware of her wider efforts to engage Parliament in issues affecting the Nigerian Diaspora.”

This testimony reflects her dedication to advocating for the rights and welfare of migrants, particularly in the wake of such tragedies.

However, Olasubomi’s detailed research work alongside others and the idea she promoted for the Committee to meet with Nigerians in the UK, which was finally granted by the Committee, were considered valuable as they have played a prominent role in the fact-finding process of the Committee.

  1. Olasubomi’s involvement and historic impact working with Global NGO Executive Committee GNEC – Liaison for global NGO to the UN.

(First Elected in June 2021 and recently Re-elected – Now serving from August 2024)

One of her notable accomplishments includes her leadership role in the Global NGO Executive Committee GNEC (She won a global election to become one of the 18 elected board members) – GNEC is a liaison for global NGO to the UN, where she advocated for broader leadership opportunities and inclusivity within the NGO sector.

  1. OLASUBOMI’S APPOINTMENTS AND IMPACTS AT THE UNITED NATIONS

Olasubomi’s work to promote United Nations objectives has been instrumental in shaping global agendas and advocating for the rights of marginalized communities.

When the UN was about to commence the planning of the 2024 UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi, Kenya – the first in Africa. Olasubomi Iginla Aina was one of the 8 Globally Appointed Civil Society leaders identified as the The United Nations NGO Taskforce Committee for the planning of the 2024 UN Civil Society Nairobi Conference.  https://www.instagram.com/ainasubomiii/p/C74eESeqCjv/

Out of the 8 selected, she was the only British Nigerian Appointed into the Taskforce.     2024UNCSC | United Nations

Olasubomi and 7 other Taskforce members kick start the planning of the UN Conference. They  selected the 2 Conference Co- chairs, over 27 Sub-comittee Co-chairs and well over 100 Sub-committee members out of the thousands of global submissions made. Her Appointment was based on excellence, dedication, ability to make global impact and track record of success.

Aside the Taskforce. Olasubomi was also Appointed to lead the Outreach Committee (Youth) as a Co-chair.

AS CO-CHAIR OF THE OUTREACH COMMITTEE

Olasubomi’s initiative to recruit Conference Champions was also a big success. With the support of her dedicated team she was able to recruit CELEBRITIES and notable INFLUENCERS to assist with global awareness for the 2024 UN Nairobi Conference, within 3 weeks, she got 27 NOTABLE CELEBRITIES and INFLUENCERS from 25 countries she engaged with. Her innovative approach to outreach working with CELEBRITIES successfully helped to raise massive awareness for the UN Nairobi Conference. A unique concept which added value to the entire conference. This demonstrates Olasubomi’s strategic thinking and commitment to engaging diverse audiences.

This was acknowledged in a recommendation letter by: Troy G. Wolfe.  United Nations Foundation (UNA-USA) Senior Director, Partnerships & Special Initiatives

“Indeed, Olasubomi brought her keen sense of creativity and expertise to bear on the activities of the Outreach Sub-Committee; her invaluable contributions as Co-chair of the Committee, together with other Sub-Committees, produced the “ImPact for the Future” Outcome Package:

https://www.un.org/sites/un2.un.org/files/2024uncsc_impact_for_the_future_outcome_package.pdf

The Outreach Committee which Olasubomi Co-chaired also used Global Action Mosaic as an engagement tool before, during and after the UN Civil Society conference, as well as in preparation for the upcoming Summit of the Future later in September 2024. The Global Action Mosaic was used to engage citizens globally and showcase what they are doing to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As the only online platform that uses crowdsourcing and artificial intelligence to map the SDGs, the Global Action Mosaic initiative has made significant strides towards providing relevant data on the SDGs and showcase what the civil societies that engaged with it are doing to make them our reality by 2030. With this initiative,

over 300 projects were mapped on the Global Action Mosaic, providing a glimpse on the strength of civil society as they mobilize for the SDGs.

By leveraging technology creatively, the Global Action Mosaic has harnessed the collective intelligence of a global community, enabling diverse and inclusive participation in solving complex sustainable development challenges. This approach not only democratizes problem-solving but also ensures that solutions are practical, scalable, and tailored to local contexts. Providing data-driven insights is crucial in highlighting the work being done around the SDGs. For example, from over 300 projects mapped on the Global Action Mosaic for the UN Civil Society Conference, over 70% came from the global south with 52% of the projects being women led. These points provide key data around the geographic and gender entrepreneurs taking action and can be used to increase public awareness and empower women and marginalized groups as their voices are part of the solutions and efforts driving the SDGs.

Data collected by the Outreach committee is very useful and this is a great success on it’s own.

OVERALL UN CONFERENCE OUTCOME

The overall outcome of the UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi was a big success with 2158 civil society representatives, 317 officials from Member States, International Organisations, and the UN system, 67 media representatives, and 47 volunteers, from 115 countries, with hundreds more online. The Nairobi Conference was indeed a great success. As this brought a huge blessing to Civil society Organisations in Kenya. Kenyan government demonstrated support for the UN Nairobi Conference and this led to the declaration of the Private Benefit Organisation (PBO) – This act will promote the partnership between the government and the civil society organisations in Kenya. The operationalisation of PBO Act  has been on hold since 2012. But the President of Kenya announced to us at the closing ceremony of the UN Nairobi Conference that the PBO has been declared operational. This is a huge victory.

  1. STATE OF AFRICAN DIASPORA

In 2014, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, President-in-Office of the African Union gave a mandate to Dr Louis-Georges Tin “to give substance” to the African Diaspora; and then with an international team, Dr Tin created the State of the African Diaspora (SOAD) which was launched during the Summit of the African Union (July 1st, 2018).

Olasubomi was invited to become a SOAD Ambassador in 2019. She served the SOAD as an Ambassador for 3 years as a committed Ambassador receiving no wages for playing this role.

In 2022 After hearing of all the efforts Olasubomi made at the start of the Ukraine war she was invited to become the Minister of youth and Development for the state of African Diaspora https://thestateofafricandiaspora.com/soad-newly-appointed-minister-of-finances-and-minister-of-youth/.  Olasubomi plays this role to date as a volunteer.

Her efforts to assist with the development of African youths cannot be overemphasized. She liaises with different governments, organisations and the UN on youth related matters.

  1. LIGHTUP SCHOOL

OLASUBOMI FUNDS THE LIGHTUP SCHOOL WHICH SERVES A COMMUNITY DOMINATED BY CITIZENS OF TOGO, NIGERIA AND BENIN REPUBLIC.

The Lightup Nursery and Primary school started January 2018. Over 6 years ago now.

The Ikhare linear settlement exist between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagoon water, this settlement houses migrants from Nigeria, Togo and Benin Republic. Before the establishment of the school, there was no free school in the community, the community is dominated by residents who are impoverished, most of the residents practice fishing and petty trading. They and their children are not ambitious. Parents are not motivated to send their children to school because there is no free school on the island and to access the closest free school, the children will need to pay for a round trip to take a boat to cross the ocean to the main land. However, due to the financial state of the residents, they are unable to afford the transportation of their children to a free school. So, children stay at home, parents abuse their children sexually and many children get pregnant and recycle the circle of poverty.

Olasubomi worked with the missionaries of Ikhare to provide FREE education for children of Ikhare. Today, every year approximately 100 children are given free access to education in the community of Ikhare. Children are also provided with moral instructions and information on how to safeguard themselves from abuse. Parents meetings are held often to assist parents in their parenting duties. Now children’s future ambition are no longer restricted to fishing.

  1. BAG OF HOPE

OLASUBOMI FUNDS THE LIGHTUP BAG OF HOPE INITIATIVE – THE LARGEST CANVAS BAG IN THE WORLD USED TO CREATE AWARENESS ON THE UN RIGHTS OF THE CHILD (UNCRC)

This is an on-going project that has being going on since 2015 to date.

Olasubomi has been involved in many schemes and initiatives but if any one of those could define her, it would be the Bag of Hope.  Bag of Hope (BOH) is a unique global project designed and funded by her.  The Bag of Hope is huge both in its actual manifestation and in its spectacular range and vision.  This is the largest canvas bag in the world, a physical embodiment of hope and it has already taken its place in the Guinness Book of Records on the 24thNovember 2015.  Far more importantly, the Bag of Hope is a symbol and a rallying point around which activities are run to raise awareness of the UN rights of the child.  This is a vehicle to engage and empower young people and to mobilize them and make them aware of the issues surrounding child abuse and child protection.  The Bag of Hope sets out to challenge parents, teachers, politicians and policy makers to make positive changes to improve the lives of children all over the world.

https://public.curryscloudbackup.co.uk/portal/public-shares/bouniykw/*_OGQxMzVhZmY4MDM2NDliOThlNzdjZTE4MDUxYzg0Mzc=

The Bag is a physical receptacle of the hopes and dreams of young people all over the world.  Olasubomi organised and funded the creation of this bag in Africa. Thousands of children both educated and uneducated were involved in the design, creation and global tour  of the BOH which has received wide publicity in the news. This is a link to the documentary produced for the BOH project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cb-3DbJwd1U

During the phase one of the BOH Project, the BOH was created, Olasubomi started to raise awareness of the rights of the child with the Lightup team. BOH Phase two involves touring with the Bag and inviting children to engage with the project by decorating it.

The BOH project has visited Uganda, Nigeria, Scotland and England.  The UN Arts Ambassador Ibiyinka Alao have been involved with Olasubomi in this project. On the tours, children decorate patches to place on the bag, a very personal and significant contribution.  During this process, awareness is raised about the UN rights of the child.  Children are encouraged to think about their own lives, to be confident to speak about any issue that may be affecting them as well as to feel part of this broader landscape; this is manifested in the Bag.  This simple message resonates with all children.  Children and young people feel able to talk freely to Olasubomi; it is as if she has a key to unlock their inner selves.  She has received no funding for this project and uses her own money to tour with the Bag and her exceptional initiative to encourage others to donate resources.  So far over five thousand children have been involved across four nations and the ultimate intention is to visit at least thirty countries around the world.

She has visited schools for children with visual and auditory impairment, state schools, private schools and children not in mainstream education. She has empowered and inspired several thousand children/young people with this project and made an extraordinary impact in the lives of many with this inspirational and inclusive initiative. Its success lies in its simplicity; it taps into the natural desire of any child to be involved in something creative and to connect with other children.  Their interest and excitement is maintained with the issue of a Certificate of Participation and BOH stickers.
